Book Depository to establish Australian supply?
In 2011 Nick Sherry, the then Small Business Minister said ‘In five years, other than a few specialist booksellers in capital cities, we will not see a bookstore, they will cease to exist.’
Despite his dire prediction that the growing ebook and online retail industry would suffocate our local bricks and mortar book shops, there are still over 900 bookshops in Australia, generating over a 1 billion dollars a year.
But there are rumours that Book Depository, the international online bookseller, is negotiating a deal between some Australian publishers to supply direct.
What happens to the GST on books? And could this have an impact on our book shops?
